AI Agent Status on Mac: Hover, Usage and Reset Times
Keep each tool's terminal or app open for its full conversation. Agent HUD gives you a shared view of running turns, remaining quota and reset times from your Mac notch or Dynamic Dock, with readings that depend on the client.
Check the current turn before switching windows
A terminal shows one conversation in detail. A status monitor answers a different question: which agent is working, which needs your attention, and which account still has allowance?
For Claude Code and Codex, Agent HUD detects running turns and completed turns. A completion means the turn ended; it does not certify that the requested task succeeded. Other clients have their own detection limits.
Hover to see usage
- Move the pointer over the notch or Dynamic Dock to open its panel after the configured hover delay.
- If you enable the Option requirement, hold Option while hovering. Entering the area without it keeps the panel closed.
- Immediate opening at the top edge is optional. It applies above the top HUD; side and bottom placement keep their hover delay.
- Read the account's plan usage and reported reset times, then open statistics for session and token detail. A long panel scrolls while its footer stays available.
Remaining plan allowance and tokens answer different questions
| Reading | Use it for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Plan quota and reset time | Whether an account has allowance for the next task | Available only when the provider and sign-in expose limits |
| Session tokens | How much recorded model work a conversation used | Not the account's remaining subscription quota |
| API-price estimate | Comparing recorded usage at model API prices | An estimate, not your subscription bill |
| Account balance | Available credit for balance-based services | A balance is not a reset window |
When an agent needs attention
Supported approval requests appear on the Mac HUD. With Client hooks enabled, Claude Code and Codex can offer the choices the request actually supports; setup and trust requirements vary by client.
A turn-completion reminder opens the associated session statistics. Read the terminal or client for the complete result. Mac HUD reminders are separate from macOS Notification Centre notifications.
Keep status visible on an external monitor
A physical notch is optional. Dynamic Dock can sit on the top, bottom, left or right edge of a display. Drag it to the edge you use; each display retains its own mode and placement.
If agent logos are hidden, hold Command to reveal the drag area. A display without a notch starts with Dynamic Dock. Choose the arrangement that leaves your editor and terminal readable.
Check status away from the Mac
Free local monitoring stays on the Mac. Agent HUD Remote adds viewing on iPhone, widgets and Apple Watch; the iPhone app is free, and cross-device viewing is a paid feature.
Keep Agent HUD running on the Mac. iPhone can also read recent supported Claude Code and Codex conversations. The released phone and Watch apps cannot approve or steer an agent.
Common questions
- Does hovering spend my plan usage?
- Opening the panel does not send an AI prompt. Usage readings and alerts are monitoring operations, not model tasks.
- Why can I see activity but no remaining quota?
- Some clients or API-key sign-ins provide local activity and tokens without subscription limits. Check the client page for which readings that sign-in supports.
- Does a completed turn mean the task succeeded?
- No. It means the turn ended. Read the client’s answer and validate its result before treating the task as complete.
- Do I need a MacBook with a notch?
- No. Dynamic Dock works along any of the four screen edges, including external displays. Local monitoring requires macOS 14 or later.
